This disease can be treated by a variety of methods ranging from conventional medications to natural methods. And out of these methods, zinc treatment for psoriasis is found out to be quite an effective one.

Basis Of The Treatment

Studies have shown that the deficiency of zinc can lead to the development of many unwanted skin conditions including psoriasis. It is found out that the zinc levels in the plasma of a person affected with psoriasis tends to be quite low. Zinc treatment for psoriasis is based on this fact and the treatment procedure involves various methodologies to combat the condition.

Use Topical Zinc Products

Using topical zinc products is one of the effective methods to combat the condition of psoriasis. These products help in reducing the abnormal growth of skin cells and also help in reducing skin inflammation. They help in retaining the skin moisture as well as help to reduce the uncontrollable itching which is usually associated with the disease. The products also help in causing a marked reduction in the size of lesions and scales which characterize the disease.

Topical zinc products are available as ointments as well as shampoos. Zinc pyrithione is a commonly prescribed topical cream for treating psoriasis. It is recommended that one apply this ointment directly onto the skin lesions, 2 to 3 times a day. Zinc shampoos are found to be particularly useful in treating scalp psoriasis.

Scalp psoriasis can also be treated by using zinc topical creams and zinc shampoos in conjunction with each other. You can apply the zinc ointment onto your scalp at night and go to bed by wearing a shower cap to cover your head. In the morning do wash off the ointment by using a medicated shampoo containing zinc. Do see to it that you rinse your hair properly so as to prevent the accumulation of residues on the scalp. Following this treatment every alternate day will yield you quick results.

It is advised for one to follow a zinc rich diet containing fish and lean meat. If you are a vegan, then you can have your required zinc dosage by including whole grains, fruits and vegetables in your diet.

The Precautions

Before venturing into zinc treatment for psoriasis, do check up with your doctor to find out if the mode of treatment is a suitable one for you. If your lesions are open and oozing, then do refrain from applying zinc ointments. Also proper medical advice is necessary so as to ascertain the exact quantity of your zinc intake. Since increased levels of zinc in the body can lead to a deficiency of copper, it is advised that you also have copper supplements along with oral zinc supplements.
