Psoriasis: Relief through Controlled Lifestyle
Psoriasis simply subsides and aggravates in cyclic order but shows no sign of curing completely and this nagging disease affects over 3% of all Americans. There are various therapies and drugs to keep it under control and visiting a doctor is must if the disease aggravates. But in the initial stages and in the milder versions, you can try some lifestyle changes and home remedies to give you relief.
The first thing to follow is a clean and hygienic lifestyle. In fact those affected with psoriasis needs to be extra clean than most of the people so that no secondary ailments can take advantage of the situation. So start off with a routine of daily baths. This helps to remove the dead skin cells as well as calm down the irritating and burning sensation that results from scratching and inflammation of the skin. Epsom salts, Dead Sea salt, bath oil, etc. are good for psoriasis, but avoid harsh soaps and hot water. Instead use oil enriched soaps and lukewarm water.
Do not rub to dry the skin as it can once again irritate and inflame the skin. Just blot it dry and follow it up immediately by applying a heavy ointment based moisturizer on the still moist skin. If your skin is very dry then go directly for the oils as they have more of moisture retaining power. In the dry seasons, apply moisturizer several times during the day. It is often advised to apply moisturizer on the affected portions and wrap it with plastic overnight and wash off the next morning for relief.
Use little amount of sunlight by exposing the affected parts to the sun for short periods. This short exposure can provide relief to some extent. But make sure that you do not overexpose it or your condition will worsen. Use sunscreen to ward off any harmful effects of the UV rays. If you want to sunbathe, consult your doctor to make sure whether it will suit you. Application of over the counter medicated creams and ointment containing salicylic acid and hydrocortisone provide some relief in mild psoriasis. For scalp psoriasis one should use medicated shampoo.
Avoid all the substances that trigger psoriasis and stay away from injuries, smoking, stress and prolonged exposure to sunrays. Though alcohol does not aggravate psoriasis in any way, it may diminish the effect of many of the treatments. So avoid it.
