Life Threatening Skin Rashes

Skin rashes are generally not more than a nuisance and rarely life threatening. But all skin rashes are not like that. Some rashes can have dangerous consequences. They may be the symptoms of something very serious brewing inside. So it is very important to identify these particular types of rashes before it is too late.

Pemphigus Vulgaris is a chronic auto immune skin disease that can relapse over time. The immune system of the body regards the cell of the skin and the mucous membranes to be foreign bodies and attacks them. The blisters formed in case of Pemphigus Vulgaris are elevated, irregularly shaped and are normally more than half inch across.

The blisters can spread to other parts of the body quite rapidly. If open sores get infected, they might spread to the blood and turn fatal.

Steven Johnson Syndrome is more common in men and affects the mucous membranes of the mouth and eyes. In severe cases it may spread to other membranes also. The lesions in this disease have a purple center surrounded by red circle. The rashes may develop further to form blisters and then they become painful and itchy.

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis is more common in women. The skin rashes are preceded by mouth ulcers and conjunctivitis. The lesions start usually in the genital regions or face and run all over the body rapidly causing large blisters.

The skin peels off in large sheets and if the eye gets seriously affected, there is a chance of pus drainage from them. Loss of large amounts of skin may make the person susceptible to infections which can turn life threatening. If not treated early, it may cause death.

Toxic Shock Syndrome normally affects the female teens and young adults. Skin rashes are preceded by fever, headache, nausea, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea. The rashes generally appear as red spots which may cover most of the body. This disorder may affect the internal organs and also the brain. When the cardiovascular fails to work properly, the body might go in a state of shock.

Finally, the last of the fatal five, Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome is identifiable with sudden appearance of rashes in the skin creases that soon spreads to the rest of the body. Within a day the skin starts to wrinkle and form irregular and large blisters. These break open easily and the skin peels off.
