First Aid Treatment For Blisters

When you first see a blister on your skin, first thing that you must not do is to break the blister. You have to just leave it undisturbed. It is recommended to leave the blister uncovered unless something strikes against the blister. If you suspect that something would rub, then you have to apply an unfastened band aid around the blister.

You should secure the band aid in such a way that it does not touch the blister. You should also not tightly wrap the band aid so that it slashes off the blood supply from the area. Too light tapes might lead symptoms like skin numbness, tingling sensation, pain, pale swollen skin, etc.

If you see blister in a area where too much of pressure is applied like the foot, then it is better that you put a doughnut shaped mole skin pad around the blister to protect it from breaking due to high pressure. The area over the blister should be open.  It is also advisable to avoid shoes that rub with the blister.

Home Treatments For Blisters

Home treatment for blister helps to alleviate the blister pain; prevent blister infection or helps in healing huge unbroken blisters. The first step in home treating the blister is to first wash your hands with soap to prevent infection when you touch the blister. First, you have to understand that very large blisters will break on its own and heal quickly if it is left undisturbed.

If you want to drain such large blisters clean a thin needle with soap or alcohol, and gently puncture the edge of the blister. Press the fluid in the blister towards the direction of the puncture. After you have drained all the liquid completely, wash the skin with mild soap and dry with clean cloth.

It is not advisable to tear the skin flap of the drained blister unless you see dirty pus or any kind of infection under the skin.  Even if you see a small crack in the blister skin, slowly smooth it evenly over the skin.

Following the draining, you have to apply some amount of antibiotic ointment like polymyxin B, bacitracin, etc. You also have to check if you are not allergic to one or more ingredient of the antibiotic cream. The ointment not only disinfects the blister but also prevents the band aid from gluing to the skin.

You also should not use alcohol or iodine over the blister as it delays the healing process of the skin.  Following the application of the ointment over the blister, you can freely tie a band aid around the area. If you feel some itching after tying the band aid, then you have to remove the band aid to prevent skin allergic reaction.

The band aid should be changed every day or every time it gets soggy. You can also soak the band aid in cold water before removing it from the skin as it causes less pain.  You should also avoid activities that irritate the blister area.

Watch For Skin Infection

One important thing that you have to be wary about is that during blister healing you have to prevent any kind of skin infection.
