Dermabrasion: Know More Before You Opt For It!

Dermabrasion is a procedure through which the upper layer of the skin is removed to make it look smooth and spotless. This procedure can be conducted on the entire face or any particular part of it. Dermabrasion is generally conducted on the people who have acne scars, scars that have occurred due to some injury, rosacea ( on the nose) and wrinkles (around the mouth). Some people opt for dermabrasion to remove tattoos.

This is a type of treatment; hence it is usually done at the dermatology clinics. But nowadays, a lot of brands that manufacture beauty products have come up with Dermabrasion kits.

In this technique the dermatologists use a wire brush or any other instrument like diamond wheel with coarse edges, to remove the upper layer of your skin. The diamond wheel or the wire brush is rotated on the skin vigorously so that the top layer of the skin gets removed and looks even.

It may hurt your skin and sometimes may result into bleeding. But it recovers soon and a new layer of skin starts developing over the wounded one.

How the dermatologists do this?

Before the entire procedure is conducted on an area of your body, the skin of that particular area is made insensitive with the application some local anesthesia. After this, some ice packs are applied for 30 minutes on the surface of the skin.

Sometimes, the application of local anesthetics and ice fail to make the skin hard; in such cases, cryogenic sprays are used to make the skin rigid, so that a deep abrasion procedure can be conducted. As this is a painful process, the specialists may sometime prescribe pain killers as the treatment is carried out.

What are its aftereffects?

There are some common temporary side effects of this procedure. After dermabrasion your skin may show some abnormally red patches which disappear after sometime.

The upper layer of the skin may swell a little bit because this treatment is quite harsh to the skin. Sometimes, it may give birth to some tiny cysts on the skin which are often known as milia. Milia can be treated with the help of antibiotics.

After this special treatment, your skin becomes a bit sensitive towards heat and sunlight. Therefore it is always advisable to use a sun screen lotion before you step out of your home (even if it is for 10 minutes!)

Can it be done at home without using chemicals?

Dermabrasion can be done at home with the help of natural ingredients. If you want to do this at home without opting for the costly procedure then try out this home made mixture:
Take the white portion of an egg, 1 teaspoon of diatomaceous earth, ½ tablespoon of whole wheat powder and ½ tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix them well to make a paste. Now add 2 tablespoons of rose water to it and mix again. Put this mixture on your skin and massage it in a circular motion. Keep it on for 8 to 10 minutes and then wash it off with cold water.
