Causes Behind Change in Appearance of Aging Skin
Aging shows on the skin. This is true for every people though for some it may show early while in the others this thing will take some time. So you will find the aging skin sags, shows signs of wrinkle, roughens as well as turns scaly in some portions and shows spots. But what really happens to the skin that it shows the signs of aging?
Various factors are responsible for giving the skin its natural shine and elasticity in the young age. But these factors either vanish or get weak and do not do what they were once doing.
In the women, post-menopausal changes are one of such factors. Similarly, for both men and women, the drop in the collagen level can contribute to the changes in appearance of the skin. With age the earlier sun damages resurface. And there are many more.
One of the main factors responsible for showing the age on skin is the loss of collagen. Collagen is the supportive structure which holds the skin together. It also supports other tissues and blood vessels in the skin.
This important substance can get reduced by as much as 30 percent in the women who have experienced menopause. As a result the skin loses its elasticity and firmness and starts drooping and wrinkling. Regular or continuous exposure to sunlight also damages collagen and causes wrinkles.
The replacement of cells also slows down. So the dead cells start accumulating on the surface and the makes the older skin rough. As circulation gets slower any damage to the skin takes longer to repair. This shows more in the legs because the heart has to work more to circulate blood to this area which is farthest from the heart.
The appearance of the face changes a lot. Subcutaneous fat, lying just beneath the skin, starts to diminish with age. Also the skin starts to get thinner and less elastic. All these factors lead to sagging of the facial skin. Wrinkles appear in the areas around the nose, mouth and chin.
The bones also lose their mass and that leads to the skin folding away from the muscles and gravity pulling them down. This is noticed more in the area of the jowls. Also the areas of the face that move more develop wrinkles and furrows.
