Acanthosis Nigricans is a skin disorder characterized by the development of velvety, thick dark skin in the body creases and neck. The markings may vary from light brown to black color.

It may affect people of any age and race but is more common in dark skinned people. It is usually associated with obesity or certain medical conditions such as poly-cystic ovary but at times affects even the healthy people.

Causes of Acanthosis Nigricans

Acanthosis Nigricans is usually seen in association with increased insulin level in the body which can be due to either type 2 diabetes or obesity. Consumption of sugary and starchy foods may leads to insulin resistance which lead to elevated insulin levels in the blood.

Increased level of insulin in the body triggers the insulin receptors in the skin and impels them to grow abnormally and causes changes in skin. In certain cases this skin disorder is inherited while in certain other cases large doses of niacin or oral contraceptives may also leads to Acanthosis Nigricans.

In very rare instance this skin disorder is seen associated with tumors in stomach or gut and in such cases the discoloration can also be seen on lips and hands. This skin changes can also be due to endocrine disorder and the related hormonal problems.

Symptoms of Acanthosis Nigricans

Discoloration of the skin is the major symptom and it may appear in armpits, neck, groin and in any of the body folds. Rarely the discoloration is noted on the soles of the feet, palms, lips etc. These changes appear slowly and develop over a period of time which may vary from months to years and rarely the affected areas develop itching.

Treatment for Acanthosis Nigricans

If Acanthosis Nigricans is due to obesity then losing of weight through dieting and exercising improves the skin condition however if there is any underlying causes then it must be treated first.

Diet that regulates insulin level in the body or the medications that can control insulin level are ideal to treat this skin disorder. Most of the physicians prescribe topical applications such as retinoid cream, 20% urea, beta or alpha hydroxy acids etc for improving the skin condition. If the skin discoloration is spreading rapidly then take a physician’s help at the earliest.
